Semantic technologies are at the heart of Ontology System’s approach to simplifying the understanding and management of service providers’ operational systems. Applying ontologies (the structured, declarative representation of concepts and their relationships) to the data already extant within IT infrastructures has resulted in Ontology’s development of a breakthrough for service providers - OSS/CAD.
In the last five years semantics and ontologies have grown in interest, innovation and use, thanks to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Coining the term the “Semantic Web” to encapsulate their vision for the web’s future (www.w3.org/2001/sw), the application of semantics and ontologies within IT is now a rapidly gowing field.
From these recent developments, two widely adopted W3C standards have emerged:
- Resource Description Format (RDF) – a web standard for the underlying representation of semantic data.
- Web Ontology Language (OWL) – a knowledge representation language used for defining and sharing ontologies.
